When: Wednesday, Mar. 13, 2024

Time: 4 p.m. EDT

Where: Civitas Metropolitan Stadium, Madrid, Spain

Inter Milan has a 1-0 aggregate lead heading into Leg 2, which means Atleti will need a two-point lead in Wednesday’s match in order to advance to the next round without the match going to penalty kicks. Last time out, Marko Arnautovic finally found the net at 79′ after two previous attempts to give Inter the edge and take the first leg.

This time, Arnautovic and Carlos Augusto are not making the trip due to ongoign muscular issues, joining Juan Cuadrado and Stefano Sensi, who are still out on a long-term basis. Inter is coming off a 1-0 win over Bologna in Serie A, while Madrid lost to Cadiz 2-0 on Saturday.

Antoine Griezmann is expected to return to Atletico Madrid’s lineup in the Champions League match against Inter Milan on Wednesday after recovering from an ankle injury.

Griezmann had been nursing a right ankle sprain sustained in the first leg in Italy three weeks ago. The France international practiced normally for the second straight day on Tuesday and is set to make it back to the starting 11 of coach Diego Simeone.

Atletico enters the match at the Metropolitano Stadium needing to reverse a 1-0 loss from the first leg. Griezmann got injured in that game, having to be substituted in the 78th minute.

The forward has been one of Atletico’s top players this season, with 18 goals scored, though he hasn’t found the net in eight straight matches.

Atletico, coming off a 2-0 loss at relegation-threatened Cadiz in the Spanish league, was eliminated in the group stage of the Champions League last season.

Atleti boss Diego Simeone will be hopeful of having Antoine Griezmann and Jose Gimenez in the matchday squad, but Thomas Lemar, Cesar Azpilicueta and Vitolo are sure to miss out due to injuries.

In case Gimenez is not passed fit, Gabriel Paulista and Stefan Savic would stand in line to occupy a central defensive role, with Nahuel Molina likely to start ahead of Marcos Llorente on the right wing.

Alvaro Morata can be joined in attack by Memphis Depay, while Saul Niguez, Rodrigo De Paul and Koke are sure starters in the middle.

Atletico Madrid possible XI: Oblak; Molina, Savic, Witsel, Hermoso, Lino; Saul, De Paul, Koke; Depay, Morata

Marko Arnautovic, who scored the winner in the first leg, is sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Carlos Augusto picked up a calf injury in last weekend's win at Bologna. The duo will join Juan Cuadrado and Stefano Sensi in the treatment room.

Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi could bring in Federico Dimarco to replace Augusto at left wing-back, with Benjamin Pavard and Stefan de Vrij starting over Yann Bisseck and Francesco Acerbi at the heart of defence.

In attack, Lautaro Martinez is expected to be partnered by Marcus Thuram, with the likes of Hakan Calhanoglu and Henrikh Mkhitaryan marshaling the midfield.

Inter possible XI: Sommer; Pavard, De Vrij, Bastoni; Darmian, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Martinez

For Atletico Madrid vs. Inter Milan, Eimer is picking Inter to draw no bet for a -130 payout. The expert acknowledges that Atletico are a much different team at home than they are on the road and will put up a much bigger fight in the second leg of the competition. That being said, the Italian side has been so dominant across all competition that they will be very difficult to defeat.

The Nerazzurri have scored 70 goals and allowed only 13 through 28 Serie A matches, domenstrating how good their defense is behind the superstar Lautaro Martinez and Inter's forward attack. Even with Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann being in top form for Atletico, Inter will be difficult to slow down.

A fascinating clash between two giants of Spanish and Italian football takes place in Madrid tonight as Atletico host Inter in the Champions League. A late Marko Arnautovic goal hands the visitors a slim aggregate lead ahead of this last-16 second leg.

Diego Simeone’s Atleti have endured a mixed season and their trophy hopes now rest on an unlikely run in the Champions League. However, Antoine Griezmann is back in their squad for this evening’s match and the cauldron-like atmosphere of Estadio Metropolitano will be at the heart of whatever rally Atletico can muster.

But overcoming any deficit against this Inter side is a tall order. Last season’s beaten finalists are top of Serie A and enjoying a 13-game win streak as they rock up in the Spanish capital - and they harbour genuine ambitions of going one step further this time around.
